It is with great regret that we will be cancelling the Duke of Wellington’s Garden Party scheduled on the 29th August.
SCDC Environmental Health requested a meeting to discuss this year’s event on the back of one complaint they received last year from one of our neighbours. Whilst the purpose of the meeting was for them to understand the nature of the event (we explained that it was a lively village event which sees well over 1200 villagers attending throughout the day) they described their visit “a PR exercise” to satisfy the complainant. Further discussions revealed, however, the council could not guarantee there would be no action taken on the day of the garden party should anyone choose to make a complaint.
As some of you may already know, the garden party is a risky venture for us – We don’t charge an entry fee, don’t inflate the food or drink prices and in addition arrange for a number of bands to play, external toilets, additional staff, stock etc.... the list goes on. We therefore feel that we cannot take the financial risk of hosting the garden party knowing that an Environmental Health Officer could turn up & request the music is stopped at any time.
We are extremely disappointed about having to make this decision, & would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who have supported our past garden parties & events.
